I wouldn't be so down on Non Steroidal AntiInflammatory Drugs if there weren't so many totally great holistic alternatives out there that work so well.
First, let's talk about why I would rather not use NSAIDS on a patient if I don't have to.
Inflammation is a natural, protective mechanism that's necessary to stimulate the body's healing process. In an acute injury the swelling and inflammation signal us to protect the area and let it heal. Chronic inflammation causes a longer lived pain.
One of the most common ways to suppress this kind of inflammation is the use of NSAIDS. But how healthy are these medications. According to some experts aspirin and NSAIDS frequently cause gastritis or peptic ulcers and should be avoided unless absolutely necessary.
Rimadyl was originally formulated for humans. After finding that it caused liver disease it was discontinued for humans but brought into use for pets. Veterinarians are taught to take bi-yearly blood tests, checking the liver enzymes, on dogs who take Rimadyl.
Nowadays, Rimadyl is prescribed after spays and surgery. Yet NSAIDS retort healing. They're given for bladder discomfort from infection, yet they adversely affect the immune system. None of this makes any sense. The only thing that makes sense to me is the pharmaceutical companies have great advertising programs.
Here's The Rub
The class of compounds that are in and make up NSAIDS cause the breakdown of articular cartilage, thereby accelerating osteoarthritis... the very disease for which they are most commonly prescribed !
There are so many good natural alternative for arthritis pain and we'll go over that in the next newsletter.
